Re: GreaterMandasa.com: Need info regarding Mahendragiri
Dear Prafulla,
Thanks for visiting our site and for your inquiry about Mahendragiri trip.
As you are aware, only during Shivarathri time (February/March), thousands of pilgrims visit Mahendragiri. However, now-a-days some people also go there in groups throughout the year.
Anyway the following information can help you during your trip in October:
- It takes about 6 hours by walk to the Bhim Temple (top of the mountain) from Mandasa through Sabakota route without longtime stops.
- There are some sheds (and an Ashram with a Sadhu) for accomodation near Kunthi Temple.
- This Shivarathri (February) few persons (first time visitors) from Vizag lead by Mr. Srikrishna went to Mahendragiri via Parlakhemundi-Koipur-KV line. That is a difficult route but jeeps can go all the way to Kunthi Temple. Please contact Srikrishna, he would be able to provide you some helpful tips for your trip. I will also contact him to help you. Here is his email address: mutnuru_msk@yahoo.com
- This year in February month, jeep drivers from Parlakhemundi charged for small groups of people about Rs. 2000, to and fro.
- Generally we encourage the Sabakota route.
- Herewith I provide you few names and their contact numbers. You may contact for any other details. Please refer GM.Com to introduce yourself and contact the following who would help you.
Killamsetty Satyam: 994 940-1058 and 944 041-6276

Hi to All,
Hi my name is Kiran Kumar Sistu, I have been visiting the website, ‘GreaterMandasa.com’ for the past 3 years. I informed about this site to my friends from Mandasa and nearby areas.
Today to my amazement, I found 36 member profiles got registered in GM.com (2 months back it was only 22), I think still some are yet to register in this website. To publicize about this website I have created a Community in Orkut with name ‘MANDASA’, currently it has around 68 member profiles. Please visit the site and suggest how we can improve this site as well as undertake social activities through this site in Mandasa and nearby areas.

Although PREDECESSORS AND SHORT HISTORY of Manjusha was there in the link given by me, I am giving below a little more, so that you can replace the same. This contains the importance of Mahendra Giri, which you will not find in my original link.
Regards,
B.K. Singh Deo
PREDECESSORS AND SHORT HISTORY: The past glory of Manjusha, which had a very important place in the Kalinga era, is evident even today, through oriya books and documents available with libraries and individuals. Also known as Mandasa, it is a very old princely house, the first Raja of Manjusha being, Raja Vaman Singh Deo, a Rajput from the North, who established the Kingdom in 1206 A.D. It is said that he gave up his kingdom to his uncle in the North of India and came to the Mahendra Hills for penance and established the kingdom of Manjusha thereafter. Legend has it that while doing penance, he had a vision that his Kingdom would be established at a place where a sign from him would be found. At that moment a gold ring slipped from his finger and fell into the river. It was found downstream at a certain place and the Kingdom of Manjusha was established there. The river still flows and its name is very apt, ” Suna Muddi” [Golden Ring]. The head of the family continues to bear the the hereditary title of Raja. Manjusha was initially in Ganjam District of Madras Presidency then it became part of Vizag Distirct of Madras Presidency, when Orissa was formed in 1936 and is now in Srikakulam District of Andhra Pradesh. It can be approached from the NH-5 between Sompeta and Palasa. While there is a Railway Station, Mandasa Road, for important trains the Railway Station is Palasa about 11 km away . It is a place of scenic beauty with the Mahendra Giri Hills of the Eastern Ghats in the West and the Bay of Bengal in the East. The Manjusha (Mandasa Zamindari) is surrounded by the Bay of Bengal in the east, Tarla and Parlakhimidi Zamindaris in the South, the Mahendra Giri Hills in the West and Jalantara and Budharsingi Zamindaris in the North. Two rivers , namely the Sunnamuddi and the Mahendra Tanaya flow from the Mahendra Giri mountains and fall into the Bay of Bengal. Manjusha is a place of religious and mythological importance. It is said that the Pandavas, in the course of their wanderings stayed for sometime in the Mahendra Giri Hills. There are Temples dedicated to the Pandavas as well as a Shiv Temple Mahendragiri is foremost of the seven Kulagiris or principal mountains of India. It finds mention even in the epics. Mahendra Giri is also supposed to be the abode of the ancient Sage Parsurama. The Mahabharata mentions that Parsurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu made penance here for long twelve years. The Ramayana also refers to the Mahendra mountains indifferent contexts. According to the Ramayana Lord Hanuman leapt from this mountain for Lanka, in search of Devi Sita. The reference to Mahendra mountain in the ancient literature accounts and epigraphy is wide-ranging and vivid. The Brahmanda Purana describes the Mahendra mountains as sacred for its association with Indra and Hari as a place for Sraddha. The Viraja Kshetra Mahatmya gives a traditional account of Orissa in connection with the killing of the demon Gayasura by Vishnu. The legs of Gayasura fell at Mahendra Giri. The Agni Purana, the Markandaya Purana and the Skanda Purana also refer to the geography of the Mahendra mountains. The great historian Ptolemy in his description of the sea route to Eastern India refers to the Mahendra mountain. His mention of Barua (now Baruva, about 10 km from Manjusha) as a flourishing trade centre proves ancient Kalinga’s trade relations with Burma and the Mahendra region, as an important commercial centre was known to travellers and traders of foreign lands, Pliny, the Geography also refers to Mahendra Giri in his account of India. Epigraphic reports like the Nasik Cave inscription, Allahabad Pillar inscription and literary works like Raghu-Vansa of Kalidasa and Oriya Mahabharata of Sarala Das and Harsa Charita of Banabhatta give vivid accounts of the Mahendragiri. The Eastern Gangas installed the temple of Lord Gokenswara on the Mahendra mountain and the area was given the status of a Visaya which brought the place into prominence. Before Manjusha was established, the area around Mahendragiri was ruled by the Sailidbhavas, Bhaumakaras, the Cholas and the Imperial Gangas. There are three temples on top of the mountain. These temples as are named after the Pandava brothers and their mother Kunti. Sarala Das the author of Oriya Mahabharat attributes the establishment of the Gokuneswar Shivalinga to the Pandava brothers. The archaeological remains, ancient literary texts and epigraphic evidences of the place offer an interesting study for scholars to explore hitherto unknown facts about this place which was an important area under different dynasties. On the day of Shivaratri, a big festival is held which attracts thousands of pilgrims to the Hill top. The Raja Saheb of Manjusha is the Hereditary Trustee of these Temples. ‘Lord Vasudev’ is the presiding deity of Manjusha, while ‘ Ma Khillamonda’ is worshipped as the presiding Devi. Manjusha is also noted for the Manjusha Library, which is more than 115 years old, and was earlier the personal Library of the Raja Jaganath Rajamni Raj Deo I of Manjusha. Nowadays, it is managed by a Trust, and is perhaps the oldest Oriya Library in the world.

Dear Meena Kumari,
Thanks for your valuable timely suggestion. We have discussed about it last month but due to technical problems we postponed it to the last week of February 2009. However presently we are planning to clean that area before the celebrations and undertake additional activities like fencing and gardening towards the end of the month. Once again thanks for your suggestion. We need persons like you to help us develop various programs in Mandasa.
Good Luck

Dear Prafulla,
Just wanted to add:
We visited Mahendragiri through Sabakota route only. While coming down, we took the other path. I am not
sure if people can visit the place in normal days also. I would suggest you guys to gather sufficient information
about going there in October. If it is Karthika masam, I heard that people would visit the place, but please confirm.
i) Distance of around 30 km from Sabakota.
- ii) Take sufficient water with you.
iii) While walking you may not feel cold temperature, but if you stop walking you will shiver at greater altitudes. Please carry suitable jackets.
- iv) Stopping at multiple places and walking at a slower pace, we took around 10 hours to reach Kunthi temple.(Lord Siva temple installed by Kunthi)
- v) Try not to drink the well water on the top of the hill. (Kunthi temple) You can take a holy bath if
you so wish. - vi) Unless you have a person who can show the path, it is possible that you may miss the route. Since we travelled at night time, we didn’t get a chance to take photos of the route, but we moved along with other devotees.
vii) Order of visiting the temples would be Kunthi -> Dharmaraja -> Bhima (Highest peak)
viii) If you are used to visit temples of all dimensions, you won’t feel claustrophobic of the temples – you wonder how people installed these at such an altitude.
- ix) Do not miss sun rise from there.
You can reach me @9885413213.

Hi Sir,
Thank you very much for the detailed info about Mahendragiri. We were beginning to get worried, because there is very little information available on the internet. But now, everyone of us is breathing a sigh of relief 🙂
I’m sorry for the late reply, from my side… I’ll be contacting the persons that you have mentioned in your email.
Regarding my parents, my father, Mr. Patiballa Seshagiri Rao, a native of Vijayawada, is presently working as the Chief Manager in Andhra Bank at Warangal. My mother is a housewife. My place of birth is Hyderabad. I have one elder brother, Aditya, who got married recently (Feb’ 09)
Once again, thanks very much for the detailed info. Our trip to Mahendragiri is actually part of a series of 5 trips that we are planning to do. We were planning to visit the highest points in Andhra, Maharashtra, Karnataka, TamilNadu and Kerala, giving a gap of around 4 months between each trip.
This plan was formulated recently. Though I’m working in Chennai as a software engineer now, I’ve formed a group of 5 people who were my college mates during my B.Tech. They are from Hyderabad. We’ve voted among ourselves and decided to start our mission with Mahendragiri. Everyone of us is really excited about the place and we eagerly look forward to it.
Regards,
Prafulla
